🎙️🎙️🎙️ON THIS DAY IN MUSIC HISTORY, March 27, 2004, Prince changed the music industry forever with an innovative and marketing strategy that he had laid the foundation for months before hand. That day he kicked off his Musicology tour with a show in Reno, Nevada. The cost of the ticket included a copy of the Musicology album for all concert goers. The albums included with the ticket purchases were counted as sales according to Billboard so the album shot to NUMBER 3 on the charts!😀Keep in mind Prince's previous three albums failed to chart at all. 😨The move with Musicology was a ground breaking strategy in boosting record sales. The 77-show tour sold a whopping $1.4 million tickets, grossing almost $88 million. Musicology would go on to be certified double platinum by the RIAA in 2005.⁣

Prince's brilliant strategy would compel Billboard and Nielsen SoundScan to completely change its chart data method and redefine what would be regarded as a sale. For future album releases, Billboard stated that customers "must be given an option to either add the CD to the ticket purchase or forgo the CD for a reduced ticket-only price."
